Baroque castle complex and museum in Altdöbern, Brandenburg, Germany.
Schloss Altdöbern is a historic three-winged castle complex located in the village of Altdöbern, within the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district of Brandenburg, Germany. Originally a medieval water castle, it evolved through various stages, including a manor house and a hunting lodge, before becoming an event venue and museum. The castle's history dates back to the 15th century when it was owned by the Polenz family. Significant transformations occurred in 1717 when Alexander Dietrich von Eickstedt commissioned the construction of a Baroque-style château. Further expansions and renovations were carried out in 1749 and the late 19th century under Heinrich von Witzleben, who added Neo-Renaissance elements and redesigned the gardens into a romantic landscape park. The castle is currently owned by Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH and has been undergoing restoration to preserve its historical integrity. Notable features include handcrafted stucco work, illusionistic ceiling frescoes, and a large park with water features and sculptures. Schloss Altdöbern is recognized as an architectural heritage monument and serves as a cultural venue hosting events and exhibitions. It is accessible to visitors, offering guided tours and educational programs that highlight its rich history and architectural significance.
