Former military barracks on Gibraltar’s Rock, now used by civilians.
Lathbury Barracks was a military barracks in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, now used by civilians and owned by the Government of Gibraltar. Located on the southern part of the Rock, south of Spur Battery on Windmill Hill, it formerly housed United Kingdom regiments, including the 3rd Battalion Royal Green Jackets.
Lathbury Barracks was a military barracks in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, now used by civilians. It lies on the southern part of the Rock of Gibraltar, south of Spur Battery on Windmill Hill, and is owned by the Government of Gibraltar. The last United Kingdom regiment based at Lathbury Barracks was the 3rd Battalion Royal Green Jackets, which handed the site over to the local Royal Gibraltar Regiment. During World War II, the extensive tunnel network inside the Rock of Gibraltar was further extended. One tunnel linked Lathbury Barracks to the Gun Operations Room. That operations room was well connected to other tunnels, making it possible to travel to the north face of Gibraltar while remaining within the rock, including journeys along the Great North Road, where travellers could ride on passing trucks. The tunnel between the operations room and the barracks was later closed after a series of rock falls, one of which killed a civilian visitor. Lathbury Barracks has also been associated with Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Amekrane, who was imprisoned there after ordering an unsuccessful coup against King Hassan II of Morocco, before being extradited by the British Government to Morocco, where he was executed.
