Victoria Stadium is a multi-purpose sports stadium in Gibraltar, near Winston Churchill Avenue and just south of the Gibraltar Airport runway. It is used mainly for football and serves as the home ground for all Gibraltar football league clubs and the Gibraltar national football team. The stadium has an artificial turf surface and a spectator capacity of about 5,000 seats. The ground has also been used for cricket matches since 1993, when the first game there was played between the Marylebone Cricket Club and the Gibraltar cricket team. In addition, it is used for athletics and other sports, and hosts the annual Gibraltar Music Festival. Victoria Stadium has been associated with both the Government of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Football Association; sources describe ownership by the government, and later purchase by the Gibraltar Football Association to modernize the venue and meet UEFA stadium requirements. Following Gibraltar’s admission as a full UEFA member in 2013, a new Europa Point Stadium was proposed to replace Victoria Stadium, but plans later focused on renovating Victoria Stadium instead so that international matches could be played there. The stadium is named in honour of Victoria, the wife of Gibraltar philanthropist John Mackintosh.
