The Diocese of Gibraltar is a Latin-rite Roman Catholic diocese covering the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It is an ecclesiastical circumscription immediately subject to the Holy See. Centered on the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, it serves the local Catholic population through five parishes.
The Diocese of Gibraltar (Latin: Dioecesis Gibraltariensis) is a Latin-rite Roman Catholic diocese for the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It is an ecclesiastical circumscription immediately subject to the Holy See, rather than part of a wider metropolitan province. The diocesan seat is in the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, also known as Santa María la Coronada or Santa Maria Incoronata, located at 215 Main Street in Gibraltar. The territory of the diocese corresponds to Gibraltar itself and covers an area of about 6 to 6.84 square kilometres. The diocese originated as the Apostolic Vicariate of Gibraltar, erected in 1816. On 19 November 1910 it was elevated to the rank of diocese. Statistical data for 2023 indicate a total population of about 34,000 people, of whom 27,000 are baptized Catholics, representing 79.4% of the inhabitants. The diocese is organized into five parishes. It has eight diocesan priests and one religious sister. The principal patron of the diocese is Our Lady of Europe (Nuestra Señora de Europa, Nostra Signora d’Europa). As of 12 September 2025 the diocesan bishop is Charles Azzopardi, with Carmelo Zammit mentioned as bishop emeritus in several sources. The official diocesan website is available at catholic.gi.
