Royal Naval Hospital Gibraltar (RNH Gibraltar), formerly British Military Hospital Gibraltar (BMH Gibraltar), was a military hospital on Europa Road in the South District of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, near the Rock of Gibraltar. It opened around 1903 to provide medical care for British military personnel and local sailors. The complex consisted of three three‑storey buildings with a capacity of about three hundred beds. Its light‑blue exterior earned it the nickname “Wedgwood Castle”. Distinctive visitors included Queen Alexandra in 1905 and King George V in 1912. The hospital treated large numbers of wounded during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. It also cared for casualties of the Spanish Civil War, including 55 men from the German cruiser Deutschland, and casualties from HMS Hunter and the hospital ship HM Maine, many suffering serious burns. During the Second World War it received burn casualties from the Malta area while their ships were serviced in Gibraltar’s naval dockyard, and additional underground hospital facilities, including Gort’s Hospital in tunnels within the Rock, were prepared in case the main hospital was compromised. The hospital was transferred to the Royal Navy in 1963. It closed in February 2008, after which the buildings began conversion to residential use.
