King's Lines Battery is an artillery battery in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It stands along the access path to the Gate of Granada and forms part of the North Front defences of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is a Class A listed building under the Gibraltar Heritage Trust Act.
King's Lines Battery is an artillery battery in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It is part of the Fortifications of Gibraltar and lies within the North Front defences of the Rock of Gibraltar, together with Couvreport Battery, Hanover Battery, Bomb Proof Battery and the tunnel system. The battery was originally built along the access path leading up to the Gate of Granada. The King’s Lines occupy part of much older Moorish or Spanish Lines that were already in use during the siege of 1704, and they are clearly shown on maps of Gibraltar from 1627. The Lines were named soon after the 1704 Capture of Gibraltar in honour of Archduke Charles of Austria, otherwise known as Charles III, King of Spain, on whose behalf Gibraltar was captured by allied forces in 1704. King's Lines Battery is designated as a Class A listed building under the Government of Gibraltar’s Gibraltar Heritage Trust Act of 1989. The site’s ownership lies with the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence. Today it remains one of the artillery battery fortifications that illustrate the historical defensive network protecting Gibraltar’s northern approaches.
