Europa Pass Batteries are a group of artillery batteries within the Fortifications of Gibraltar, in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. They are situated northwest of Europa Point in the south of Gibraltar, just off Europa Road. The position overlooks the west shoreline around Little Bay. In 1859 the battery had seven guns covering this stretch of shoreline. Close to the shore was the Devil's Bowling Green Battery, which was overlooked by Europa Pass Batteries and the Buena Vista Battery. This arrangement linked several fortified positions dominating the area around Little Bay and the nearby coast. The artillery position forms part of the wider defensive network shown on the 1859 Map of the Fortifications of Gibraltar. As with other military sites on the Rock, associated residential property later became part of a land transfer. In 2011, ownership of houses linked to the Europa Pass Batteries passed from the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence to the Government of Gibraltar. Under this agreement, more than 300 Ministry of Defence houses and flats were transferred, while the Government of Gibraltar undertook to build 90 new houses on remaining Ministry of Defence land. The batteries themselves remain elements of Gibraltar’s historic fortifications.
