Description

Historic castle ruins with rose garden in Saathain, Brandenburg, Germany.

Schloss Saathain, located in Brandenburg, Germany, is a historic castle reduced to foundation walls after a 1945 fire. The site now features a terrace and a rose garden with over 5000 roses. It is a popular excursion destination and hosts cultural events in renovated manor spaces.

Schloss Saathain, located in the district of Saathain within the municipality of Röderland, Brandenburg, Germany, is a historic site with a rich past. Originally mentioned as "castrum Sathim" in 1140, it served as a fortification on the Black Elster River, playing a crucial role in securing river crossings and regulating trade routes. The castle was part of the imperial fiefdom of Naumburg Abbey until the late 14th century. In 1274, Bishop Meinherr of Naumburg granted it to Heinrich the Illustrious. Over the centuries, it changed hands among various noble families, including the von Köckritz and Schleinitze. Tragically, in April 1945, a fire destroyed much of the castle, leaving only the foundation walls. These remnants now support a terrace that once hosted a café. The surrounding park has been transformed into a rose garden with over 70 species and approximately 5000 rose bushes, making it a popular excursion destination. The site is recognized as a heritage monument in Germany. Cultural events, including concerts and exhibitions, are held in the renovated spaces of the former manor house and stables, contributing to its cultural significance. The village also features a historic Fachwerk church from 1629, hosting regular summer concerts.
