Schloss Großkmehlen, also known as Wasserschloss Großkmehlen, is a Renaissance and Baroque-style castle located in the village of Großkmehlen, in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district of Brandenburg, Germany. The castle is a protected architectural heritage monument and is managed by the Foundation for Castles in Brandenburg. It is situated within a four-hectare landscape park that includes a pavilion. The castle's history dates back to the 13th century when the region was contested between the Margraviate of Meissen and the lords of Upper and Lower Lusatia. Originally a defensive structure, it evolved into a stone building with living towers and a keep. In 1499, it came under the possession of the von Lüttichau family. The castle was rebuilt in the mid-16th century in Renaissance style, incorporating earlier elements, and later adorned with Baroque stucco decorations in the 17th century. After World War II, the Lynar family, the last private owners, were expropriated, and the castle was used as a nursing home until 1993. Restoration began in 1997, and it is now open to visitors. The castle hosts events like the annual Schloss- und Hopfenfest and offers guided tours, highlighting its historical and architectural significance.
