Garz Castle is a medieval structure located in the village of Garz, part of the Temnitztal municipality in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district of Brandenburg, Germany. The castle is situated on the eastern side of a former manor estate and is recognized as an architectural heritage monument. The village of Garz was first mentioned in historical records in 1364, though it likely dates back to the early 13th century, possibly established on a Slavic settlement site. The name "Garz" is believed to derive from the Slavic word "gard" or "gord," meaning castle. The castle's most prominent feature is its residential tower, constructed by the von Quast family, who were associated with the area from 1419. This stone tower, built in the 13th century, served as a residence until the 17th century. It is nearly square, with walls up to 1.40 meters thick, made of fieldstone and brick, and stands approximately 11 meters tall. A polygonal half-timbered stair tower was added in 1681. The tower was originally surrounded by moats and palisades, serving as a unique example of a medieval noble village castle. In 1945, the von Quast family was dispossessed, marking the end of their long association with Garz Castle.
