The Flatowturm is an observation tower located in Babelsberg Park, Potsdam, Germany. Constructed between 1853 and 1856, it was designed by architect Heinrich Strack, drawing inspiration from the medieval Eschenheimer Tor in Frankfurt am Main. The tower was commissioned by Crown Prince Wilhelm, later Emperor Wilhelm I, to replace a windmill that burned down in 1848. Named after the Flatow estate in West Prussia, which funded its construction, the tower stands 46 meters tall and features a neogothic architectural style. It is surrounded by a star-shaped water moat, though the original drawbridge no longer exists. The Flatowturm originally contained fourteen living spaces, including a study for Wilhelm I, but most furnishings were damaged during and after World War II. The current interior reflects reconstructions from the 1980s. The tower is part of the Babelsberg Park complex, managed by the Foundation Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from its upper platform, though it is not wheelchair accessible. The tower is a designated architectural heritage monument in Brandenburg. For more information, visitors can check the official website or visit the park, accessible via public transportation with nearby parking available.
