The Vogelbeobachtungsturm is a small wooden birdwatching tower located in Sielmanns Naturlandschaft Wanninchen, southwest of the Spreewald in the Naturpark Niederlausitzer Landrücken, Germany. This area, once heavily scarred by three decades of lignite mining, is now a surreal landscape undergoing natural restoration. The transformation has turned the former mining site into a new wilderness, where nature and people can find solace. The landscape, with its red-glowing spoil heaps at sunset, resembles a Martian terrain. Visitors can experience the haunting calls of cranes in autumn and the trumpeting of whooper swans in winter, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere. Sielmanns Naturlandschaft Wanninchen spans 3,300 hectares and includes a 5-hectare area dedicated to unique encounters at the Natur-Erlebniszentrum Wanninchen. A 1.2-kilometer nature trail offers educational insights, while five photo spots provide stunning views of the dune landscape and lake. Additionally, the 31-kilometer Wiedehopfweg trail allows visitors to traverse the entire landscape. The Vogelbeobachtungsturm serves as an ideal vantage point for observing the diverse birdlife and appreciating the ongoing natural recovery of this once-industrial region.
