Sea cave in Gibraltar, key Neanderthal habitat and World Heritage.
Gorham’s Cave is a limestone sea cave on the Rock of Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory. Considered one of the last known Neanderthal habitats in Europe, it has yielded rich stone tools, remains and rock art. Since 2016 it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Gorham’s Cave Complex.
Gorham’s Cave is a natural limestone sea cave on the southeastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, within the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar on the southern Iberian Peninsula. It lies only a few metres from the Mediterranean today, although during Neanderthal occupation it was about five kilometres inland because of lower sea levels. Discovered in 1907 by British captain Arthur Gorham, who gave the site its name, the cave quickly attracted archaeological interest. Excavations have uncovered abundant Neanderthal stone-tool assemblages and numerous human and animal remains, identifying Gorham’s Cave as one of the last known Neanderthal dwelling places in Europe. Stratigraphic studies have revealed multiple cultural layers associated with Neanderthal occupation. The cave is also notable for prehistoric rock art. Research led by archaeologists including Francisco Giles Pacheco and Clive Finlayson first identified Neanderthal engravings, initially dated between about 28,000 and 24,000 years. Later work by Joaquín Rodríguez-Vidal and collaborators documented a Neanderthal rock engraving around 40,000 years old, interpreted as evidence of symbolic thought. In 2016 UNESCO inscribed the Gorham’s Cave Complex, comprising Gorham’s Cave and three nearby caves—Vanguard, Hyaena and Bennett’s—as a cultural World Heritage Site, recognising its outstanding testimony to Neanderthal lifeways and human evolution.
