Europa Road is a major road in Gibraltar, about 2.9 kilometres long. Beginning near Trafalgar Cemetery and Trafalgar Road, it connects central Gibraltar with the southern tip at Europa Point. The road begins near Trafalgar Cemetery and Trafalgar Road and runs to the southern tip of the territory at Europa Point. Along its course, Europa Road passes several important landmarks. These include The Rock Hotel, a well-known local hotel, the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, and the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque. An old postcard shows a section of the road between The Rock Hotel and the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, indicating its longstanding role in Gibraltar’s urban landscape. Europa Road is considered the main artery serving Gibraltar’s South District and provides access to local businesses and other forms of commerce. Through this role it supports trade and the movement of people within the territory. The road’s infrastructure, incorporated into wider development in Gibraltar, has contributed to commerce and scientific education. A scientific experiment has also been carried out on the sewers beneath Europa Road to study conditions under which bacteria from sewage might be present in air within ventilation systems.
