Cuartel y Batería Buena Vista, or Buena Vista Barracks and Battery, was an artillery battery near the Buena Vista Barracks at the southern end of Gibraltar. Built on a slight ridge, it overlooked shoreline once considered unassailable and later protected Camp Bay. The complex is now abandoned state property.
Cuartel y Batería Buena Vista, also known in English as Buena Vista Barracks and Battery or simply Buena Vista Battery, was an artillery battery near the Buena Vista Barracks at the southern end of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The battery stands on a slight ridge in front of the nearby Buena Vista barracks installations, which were once the base of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment. The area of the battery and barracks was originally used as a lookout post with an attached guardroom. This guardroom fell into ruin and had to be rebuilt in the 1760s. At that time, the shoreline below the position was considered unassailable because it was swept by strong currents. The lookout position was subsequently converted into an artillery battery intended to protect Camp Bay from surprise attacks. In October 1940, during the Second World War, a 4‑inch naval gun was installed on the battery. The complex later became abandoned. The Government of Gibraltar has designated Buena Vista as a Class A listed building under the Gibraltar Heritage Trust Act of 1989, recognising its historic and military significance within Gibraltar’s wider fortifications.
