Historic artillery battery remains near Hayne's Cave on Gibraltar’s Upper Rock.
Hayne's Cave Battery is an artillery battery on Gibraltar’s west side near Hayne's Cave, on Upper Rock along Queen's Road. First occupied during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, it later mounted two 4-inch QF guns installed in 1904, whose derelict emplacements can still be visited along the Royal Anglian Way.
Hayne's Cave Battery is an artillery battery within the Fortifications of Gibraltar, on the west side of the British Overseas Territory at Hayne's Cave. It stands on the Upper Rock by Queen's Road, now reached via the Royal Anglian Way. This path, named after the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment that refurbished it in August 1969, leads up the west side of the Rock past the battery, military support buildings and Rooke Battery. The position was first occupied during the Great Siege of Gibraltar between 1779 and 1783. The battery dates from 1788, although it bears a plaque labelled 1903. It is named for nearby Hayne's Cave and for Captain Haynes, the garrison quartermaster in 1787–1788, who began construction of Queen's Road. Visitors today can see the remains of one of the two four-inch QF gun positions installed in 1904, which were about forty metres apart. In 1911 these guns were removed in favour of superior six‑inch guns at Tovey Battery. The cave itself was eventually taken over for water tanks and pumps, while the derelict gun emplacements at Hayne's Cave Battery remain accessible to visitors.
