Dudley Ward Way is a 0.5 km road tunnel in south‑eastern Gibraltar, named after Governor Sir Alfred Dudley Ward. Built by the British Army between 1956 and 1968, it links Sir Herbert Miles Road and Gibraltar’s eastern bays with Europa Advance Road near Europa Point, carrying two‑lane automotive traffic.
Dudley Ward Way is a public road tunnel through the south‑eastern part of the Rock of Gibraltar. About 0.5 km long and 7 metres wide, it has two lanes, carries automotive traffic and has a speed limit of 40 km/h. The tunnel connects the eastern side of The Rock, including Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay via Sir Herbert Miles Road, with Europa Advance Road at the southern end of Gibraltar, near Europa Point. It starts at Brian Navarro Way and ends at Europa Advance Road. The tunnel is named after Sir Alfred Dudley Ward, who served as Governor of Gibraltar from 8 June 1962 to 5 August 1965. It was constructed by the British Army between 1956 and 1968. After military tunnelling ended and the Royal Engineer tunnellers left, responsibility for maintenance was transferred to civilian authorities, and it is owned and operated by the Government of Gibraltar. On 18 February 2002 a rockfall at the northern approach road killed Gibraltarian Brian Navarro, leading the Government of Gibraltar to close the tunnel indefinitely. Works to stabilise the cliff began in 2009, and, following extensive safety and improvement works, the tunnel was reopened to traffic on 2 November 2010.
