Gibraltar International Airport, also known as North Front Airport, is a civil‑military international airport serving Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. It has the IATA code GIB and ICAO code LXGB. The airport is an international commercial aerodrome and part of RAF Gibraltar. Its runway is owned by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence for use by the Royal Air Force, while civilian operators use a separate terminal operated for civil traffic. The airport serves Gibraltar itself and the surrounding Campo de Gibraltar area in Spain. It is located very close to Gibraltar’s urban area and near the border with Spain. A striking feature is that its single runway is crossed by Winston Churchill Avenue, the main road between Gibraltar and Spain. Whenever aircraft take off or land, this road must be closed, affecting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Traffic statistics show continuing civilian use: for example, in 2012 the airport handled 387,219 passengers and 3,490 flights, and in 2017 it handled 571,184 passengers, 4,888 flights and 302 tonnes of cargo. The airport’s official website provides further operational and statistical information about this distinctive international gateway.
