Winston Churchill Avenue is a 1.5 km arterial road in Gibraltar, the only road link between Gibraltar and Spain. Beginning at the border, it becomes Spain’s CA-34 (former N-351). The avenue crosses Gibraltar International Airport’s runway near Victoria Stadium, where movable barricades close whenever aircraft land or take off.
Winston Churchill Avenue is a principal arterial road in Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory. Around 1.5 kilometres long, it begins at Gibraltar’s border with Spain, where customs and the Gibraltar–Spain frontier are located, and forms the sole road connection for entering and leaving the territory by land. Once customs are crossed into Spain, the avenue becomes the dual carriageway CA-34, formerly the national road N‑351, leading through La Línea de la Concepción. A distinctive feature of the road is its alignment across Gibraltar International Airport. At the northern end of Gibraltar, Winston Churchill Avenue intersects the airport’s single runway at surface level. Movable security barricades close the road whenever aircraft land or take off, stopping vehicular traffic for safety. The avenue passes close to Victoria Stadium, described as Gibraltar’s major sporting venue. Because having vehicles cross the runway caused congestion, the Government of Gibraltar announced in 2009 that a new road would be built to avoid this crossing. On 31 March 2023, a new dual carriageway called The Kingsway opened, linking the customs checkpoint with Devil’s Tower Road. This road crosses beneath the eastern end of the airport runway via an approximately 350‑metre tunnel.
