North Front Cemetery is a cemetery on Devil’s Tower Road in Gibraltar, the British Overseas Territory at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. Established in 1756 south of the neutral ground and the border with Spain, it is the only graveyard still in use in Gibraltar. The cemetery lies in the North District, between the north face of the Rock of Gibraltar to the south and Gibraltar International Airport to the north, just west of Devil’s Tower Camp. Also known as Gibraltar Cemetery and the Garrison Cemetery, it was originally divided into five sections for Anglicans, Presbyterians, Wesleyans, Catholics and other denominations. After the closure of Jews’ Gate Cemetery in 1848, a sixth Jewish section was added. In the twenty‑first century the cemetery is organised into three areas: Christian, Jewish and unconsecrated. North Front Cemetery is also a military cemetery and the only Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Gibraltar. It contains graves of those who died in the World Wars, including more than 750 Commonwealth war dead and casualties from 41 other countries. Nearby, at the junction of Winston Churchill Avenue and Devil’s Tower Road, stand the CWGC Gibraltar Memorial and the Gibraltar Cross of Sacrifice.
