Cave of Horror is a refuge cave in the Judaean Desert, Israel, where remains of Jewish rebels from the Bar Kokhba revolt were found. It contains ancient artifacts and scrolls dating back to 132-136 AD, including rare Greek translations of biblical texts.
The Cave of Horror (also known as Nahal Hever Cave 8) is a karstic cave in the Judaean Desert, Israel. Discovered in 1953 and excavated in 1961 and 2019, it contains significant archaeological finds from the Bar Kokhba revolt (c. 132-136 AD). The cave lies on a cliff overlooking Nahal Hever wadi, opposite the Cave of Letters where many documents were found. Inside, archaeologists uncovered the remains of 40 men, women, and children, suggesting they were Jewish rebels who died there during the revolt. Fragments of Bar Kokhba coins and Greek translations of biblical texts dating back to 50 BC have also been discovered. In March 2021, a partially mummified child's remains from the Chalcolithic period (6000 years old) were found under two flat stones in a shallow pit grave. This burial site was accompanied by Dead Sea Scroll fragments containing Greek translations of Nahum and Zechariah. Additionally, a 10,500-year-old woven basket, one of the oldest known baskets globally, was unearthed nearby. These discoveries provide invaluable insights into ancient Jewish life and history in the region.
